At Valley State College, the Languages learning area develops students’ communication, literacy and intercultural understanding through the study of English and Mandarin. Students are encouraged to become confident communicators, thoughtful readers and respectful global citizens who can engage successfully in an increasingly connected world.
English is a compulsory subject through to Year 11 and forms a core part of every student’s learning journey. Through the study of literature, media, speaking, listening and writing, students learn to analyse ideas, communicate effectively and think critically and creatively across a wide range of contexts.
Students also have the opportunity to study Mandarin, one of the world’s most widely spoken languages and an important language within the Asia-Pacific region. Through practical language learning experiences, students develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills while gaining an appreciation of Chinese culture, traditions and contemporary society.
Across both English and Mandarin, students at Valley State College are supported to build confidence, cultural awareness and the communication skills needed for future study, employment and participation in a diverse global community.
