Technology & Trades

At Valley State College, the Technology learning area equips students with practical skills, creativity and problem-solving abilities that prepare them for the rapidly changing world of work and innovation. Students are encouraged to design, create, collaborate and think critically through hands-on learning experiences that connect classroom learning with real-world applications and future career pathways.

Students have opportunities to study Food Technology, Hard Materials (Wood) Technology, ICT, and Graphics & Design across a range of year levels. Through these subjects, students develop technical skills, digital capability, project management and safe workshop practices while learning to design and produce practical solutions to authentic challenges.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) is an important part of learning at Valley State College and is integrated across multiple curriculum areas where appropriate. The school also features a specialist STEM Suite, providing flexible learning spaces and modern technologies that support coding, robotics, engineering projects, digital design and collaborative innovation. While some classes are specifically timetabled within the STEM Suite, the facility is designed to support learning opportunities for students across the entire school.

A strong focus is placed on preparing students for future pathways, including connections to Australian Trades and vocational opportunities. Students are introduced to industry-relevant tools, technologies and design processes that support pathways into areas such as construction, engineering, hospitality, manufacturing, information technology and design industries. Through practical and engaging learning experiences, Valley State College encourages students to become adaptable, creative and confident learners ready for both further study and the workforce.

In Years 11–12, students can specialise in Technology and Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses that support direct pathways into apprenticeships, traineeships, CIT, further study and employment. Senior pathway options may include:

  • Construction
  • Hospitality
  • Furniture and Timber
  • Information Technology
  • Digital Media
  • Design and Technology
  • Food and Nutrition
  • Industry-based VET Certificate courses

These programs provide students with valuable practical experience, industry knowledge and recognised qualifications that support successful transitions into tertiary education, skilled trades and the wider workforce.
